Let’s face it. As sportsmen and women, we all want the opportunity to harvest bigger bucks. We also want better age structure and a more balanced herd. But it’s not going to happen just by wishing it were so. We need to take action. Right now.
The NW Michigan Quality Deer Management Association (NW MI QDMA) has proposed an expansion of the current Leelanau County (DMU 045) antler restriction regulations to the NRC/DNR. These regulations place a 3-point per side restriction, and 4-point per side restriction, under the current combination tag. The proposed expansion of these regulations would include Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Lake, Manistee, Mason, Missaukee, Osceola and Wexford counties.
This is not a MI DNR-led effort. This is a grass-roots initiative started by passionate hunters just like you. We’ve seen the success of the Leelanau County program and know many hunters want to share in this kind of hunting. Leelanau hunters twice voted strongly for this program. The first vote passed with a 66% in-favor vote – 5 years later – the second vote resulted in an 72% hunter approval rate.
